Last night I sent an email to Maria Papagiannidou-St Pierre, thanking her for her book, "Goodbye Aids". Of course much of what she has written against the 'AIDS orthodoxy' is now fairly familiar to me. However, there are some interesting supporting documents and some facts new me. Needless to say I am in complete agreeance with all that she says. Unlike her, I have never taken any AIDS medications, so have no first hand experience of their devastating toxic effects. From her personal accounts I would say she is lucky to have survived, unlike countless millions who have not. How much longer is this appalling hoax going to last.? When will the main media finally have the guts to start exposing the HIV/AIDS scam and those companies, institutions and individuals who have and still are profiting from it?

After struggling to master the mouse on Omar's laptop I began to resign myself to limited access to the internet. I even realised and accepted this was probably a good thing. However, it still annoyed me that I was unable to access the internet on my desktop, when I should be able to, courtesy of Telus and the USB adapter, which previously worked perfectly. Inevitably I succumbed and braced myself to deal with Telus technicians. All previous interaction with just about anyone to do with Telus has proved exasperating. I was therefore not surprised after two lengthy converstaions with pleasant young men they both concluded, for different reasons, that it was my adapter or software at fault and not anything to do with Telus. This I have discovered over the years is their normal manner of dealing with customers to their satifaction. Finally, in desperation I decided to rearrange the study in order to be able to physically connect the ethernet cable to the computer. I now have internet connection! What a cafuffle!

Fate decides! Well, more precisely my computer decides. For months we have been saying some action must be taken to burn our thousands of photographs on to discs. In fairness to myself over the past year or so I have succeeded in copying many pictures. In the past few weeks I even attempted to do so again but was thwarted by the discovery I had somehow managed to delete my burning software. I intended to find it and reinstall but yesterday morning the matter became academic. I turned on the computer and discovered it would no longer boot-up. Repeated attempts simply resulted in the same frustrating cycle of action. So unless an expert can rectify the problem it seems the pictures are mostly lost, save for some already copied to my website and emailed to various persons.Strangely, there is almost a sense of relief, or at least a quiet acceptance of this finality and the realization it is not the end of the world.

As I walked further I came upon the other pair of swans with their one youngster and the ‘batty’ old lady whom I encountered in the elevator recently and who so annoyed me with her anti-dog sentiments. I do not think she recognized me. It turns out she is one of the quasi-official swan minders and has been for some years.

It is another sultry hot day and little comfort to those fighting fires around the province. Thankfully the hotwater heating in the den has remained 'off ' since the disruption to our hot water service earlier in the week. Even so the den and apartment generally are far from comfortable. One has to choose carefully the best time of day to open or close windows for beneficial temperature control. Yesterday I was stuck in the elevator and only managed to escape by forcing the door open. Both elevators have been making alarming noises for some time and by all accounts alot of residents have no confidence in them. I note the Otis repair man is on sight this morning.

The really good news from my point of view is our imminent escape for two nights stay at "The Dome" in Lund. I arranged a car rental and we will head off early Sunday morning to catch a 7:30am ferry from Horseshoe Bay. On Monday it was clear I was in desperate need of some respite from the current situation. I started talking about the prospect of heading off in to the wilderness for a week alone. This alarmed Omar. Evidentally he did not like the prospect of me going away by myself. Of course there is a grave risk this 'breathing space' amid the joy of nature will serve more to exacerbate the situation than relieve it, but I am prepared to take the risk. More likely it will galvinize me in to constructive, positive action upon our return.

Urban coyote!

I decided to take another walk in Stanley Park at about 3:30pm. It was a lovely afternoon, albeit a little cloudy, but much warmer than I had anticipated. Before long I was sweating and obliged to remove my jacket. I was over-dressed, clearly still harbouring Ottawa weather mentality. Close to the totem pole arena a crowd had gathered on the verge of the extensive lawn area to have a barbeque. Smoke wafted from their cooking and had evidently caught the attention of a park coyote which loitered within 50 yards of the group totally unperturbed by the crowd or even the half-hearted approaches of a youth. It retreated a few yards with the approach of two men wielding cameras in its direction, which is what I should have been doing had I not foolishly left mine at home. The coyote looked to be in good condition and having decided to give up on the barbeque amused itself in the middle of the lawn playing with some scrap of plastic or cardboard. I observed it for 10 minutes or so before continuing on my way.

This evening I did an on-line search for information about Vancouver's coyote population which is estimated to be at least 200 and growing. Apparently and not surprisingly they are flourishly in the city. More disturbingly they are beginning to loose their fear of humans with the inevitable adverse consequences, and becoming a serious threat to cats and dogs, notably the smaller breeds like Max. There have been incidents of startled dog walkers fending off attacks on their leashed pets. This immediately heightened my concerns about walking Max especially at night and so close to the park. I think I should acquire a sturdy walking stick just in case I have to fight off a brazen coyote.

We are back to city life again with all the good features it provides as well as the restrictions. I realised this the other evening having dined out again, this time with Jorge as our guest, and then moved on to the cinema to watch, "Milk". It occurred to me I had not seen a movie in a cinema since I left Vancouver ( actually this is not quite accurate since Omar and I went to the Imax in Gatineau shortly after our arrival in Ottawa). The theatre on Granville was huge and almost empty, which suited us just fine, and the film quite enjoyable, although Omar thought it a little slow. It prompted recollections of my one visit to San Francisco, a very enjoyable holiday with Edmund travelling on a Pam Am flight not long before the airline ceased to exist. Of course even then there were memorials to Harvey. I was so taken with the laid-back gay friendly ambience of the city that I almost decided to heed the advice of various San Franciscans and stay. With my English origins and accent they thought it would be an easy option for me and perhaps in those somewhat less paranoid times it may have been possible. But dutifully we caught our flight home carrying an assortment of mostly pleasant memories. I suppose the one exception would have to be our astonishment at the many beggars pleading for hand-outs, lines of them on some streets and especially around restaurants where they begged for our doggy bags which we gladly handed over. It was on such a street that I observed with utter disgust and near disbelief a young street woman allowing her pet rat to lick partially digested food from her tongue!

At this moment the snow is almost at blizzard intensity, though interestingly "The Weathernetwork" does not appear to be warning us of particularly bad weather. Thankfully I do not have to set foot outside again today other than to allow Max to relieve himself, which he will do as quickly as possible, a habit he has acquired since living in this artic landscape.

Meanwhile my most recent contact with Omar is from Jasper where he arrived by train around lunchtime, clearly delighted to find a significantly warmer temperature than we are used to in Ottawa, and looking forward to crossing the Rockies. He strongly recommends I follow suit by train when I finally leave Ottawa. I have long wanted to traverse Canada but previously thought it would be far too expensive to do so by rail and to drive might be far too arduous for me. The way now seems feasible.

So, the bus strikers have no intention of relieving the misery they are inflicting on the poor public, those unable to afford their own transport. I doubt our useless rich mayor (apparently still under investigation for possible improprieties re: his election) has any magical ace up his sleeve to solve the problem, so the struggle continues!

Personally I have actually started to enjoy my walks to work, although I must admit it was a little hard going the other evening after a day's snowfall. Having to divert enroute to do some essential grocery shopping and then continue with a heavy, bulging backpack made it even more difficult. But there is a certain sense of accomplishment when one arrives safely home.

Unfortunately there is no way Omar can walk to work so he is still dependent upon the kindness of fellow workers when they are able to accommodate him. Otherewise he must pay for taxis or stay home, neither of which is desirable.

Meanwhile it seems we have a lazy postman. He chose not to deliver our package yesterday even though we had been tracking it on-line and awaiting its arrival. When Omar caught up with him he gave some ridiculous story about it being too heavy for him to deliver (two DVD!) and that he did not in fact have it with him. The reality of course, he simply left it in his pick-up box, a few steps from our front door, because he could not be bothered to carry it.

<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

However, clearly that was not a one off incident and I dare say we can expect to have more sightings in future... interestingly he seems to have left his apartment lights turned on revealing a lot of tinsel and Christmas decorations hanging from the ceiling. It occurred to me the man may not even be gay, simply someone who likes to have an audience. Of course another possibility is that he is performing in response to some person, male or female, other than myself, located in another apartment in our building. I have to say though I think this highly unlikely judging by his apparent focus straight at our window. I was mildly tempted to search for my binoculars and take a closer look, the better to see his face as well as his genitalia. However, it is probably best not to give any wrong signals. Poor Babicito is not amused at this turn of events and has made no great effort to verify the guy’s behaviour, although I believe he did happen to catch sight of him the other evening.

Yesterday both Babicito and I thought she looked exceptionally feeble and towards the end of the afternoon B. discovered her huddled-up in the Australorps nest box, with a large egg underneath her. We wondered whether in fact she might have laid it. Certainly it was not the usual pale brown tinted egg laid by an Australorp. We dismissed the idea but I do now wonder whether she may have made one last egg, and her demise during the night may have been induced by the strain involved. Rather sad to see her go, poor thing, but the death of the BB OEG pullet/chick the previous night was far more worrying. She had been sick and in a decline for several days. In fact, I had observed more than a week ago that she was clearly not flourishing and predicted her probable demise. One’s concern of course is the cause, which remains a mystery. Luckily we did not have to wait long for the #14 bus to come along. We got off opposite Morisset, jay-walked and immediately noticed a middle-aged man collapsed and folded around a sign post, seemingly unconscious but snoring loudly, his shopping scattered around him. Frankly I was prepared to carrying on walking right on by, possibly allowing myself to assume he was drunk. Luckily a third man walking alongside us asked if we had a cell phone and could call 911. Omar obliged and eventually the man gained consciousness. A woman from across the street came out to tell us she had actually seen him fall after shaking violently. The emergency services started to arrive within a few minutes. Not a very commendable response on my part I realise and worth a little analysis... but not here.
