by Tony Knight

A recent visitor gives his personal views on Thailand as a holiday destination with much to offer

Do it yourself has long been part of the British way of life. Holiday-makers are now making their own way to long-haul destinations. For my first trip to the Far East I chose the Land of Smailes, booked a 21-day Thai Royal Orchid flights, tied the BKK labels on my suitcases and headed for Bangkok. It turned out to be a voyage of discovery into Orient, and into myself.

My objectives were to visit the remote north; go elephant riding; and find a deserted tropical beach. By venturing not too far off the beaten track I found all three. I decided to stay with the Imperial Family of Hotels and Amari Resort and Hotels and selected my destinations.

Much of my route followed in the footsteps of English TV Chef Keith Floyd who had teamed up with the Imperial Family of Hotels for the Thailand cooking episodes of his TV series Far Flung Floyd.
