"I Stutter." As long as I can remember, my stuttering
has been a part of me. In my youth, I stuttered severely. I had trouble
with a single word let alone a full sentence.

In grade school
students looked at me different. My social life was nonexistent. When I
entered 5th grade I was told that I had a learning disability and had
to move to different school. I thought how could my life be any worse!

I
went to this new school and not knowing anyone, my self esteem hit rock
bottom. It couldn't get any lower. I met this kid my age his name was
Doug. Doug and I became friends. To this day we remain friends.

High
school got better, my self esteem was not as bad as grade school, but I
found that my stuttering was not as bad. Still my stutter prevented me
on doing alot of social activities.

When I was 17 years of
age, a junior I read about a stuttering support group called the
National Stuttering Association (NSA) Madison Chapter. In the article
it gave their phone number. I called and talked to the guy who was the
leader of the chapter. He told me that there were roughly 20 people
that showed up at these weekly meetings. He told me that they were
beneficial. So I decided on going to one. Boy did it open my eyes! For
the first time in my life I met people who stutter. They ranged from
the severe to mild and all in between.

We talked about the
trails and challenges we face everyday with our stuttering. It was very
informative meeting. I left the meeting very impressed. It encourged me
to start up a local chapter where i used to live at the time. I started
the NSA Milwaukee Chapter.

I was the founder/President and
found some people to help run it. We had a good turn out about 15
people showed on a regular basis. It did vary from week to week but
overall I would charterize it as a success. I moved soon after and
reliquished my responsibilty to another person. I am not sure if it
still in around. I came with the experence as a very good one.

Now
that I am 38 years old a married man with a family. I am a stay at home
dad now. I can't be more happier. I have found two things that helped
me with my stuttering the most.

1.) Acceptance. You need to accept your stuttering. Its an important key.

2.) Confidence. I have had a renewed self confidence after that support group meeting.
