The Emergence of Anglesey Driftwood

Since the late 1990's we have been compulsive collectors of driftwood from and around the coast of Ynys Mon-Anglesey. Most of our spare time is spent searching the coast and rivers for what we like to call "lost art". Every time we see a potential piece the blood begins to rush to our heads. We can't climb down or up fast enough to retrieve the individual item. We examine it and then carry out the drop test. Quite simply we drop the piece from a good height to see if it breaks. Of course we don't do this to every piece just the big strong trunky type. Some of pieces are too delicate to man handle so they are carefully retrieved and gently carried. Each piece is then carefully fettled, jetwashed and dried in the sun. We don't use any cleaning agents or chemicals, just water and pain-staking time to bring the best out of the wood.

Every piece is unique and individual although we do have some that are similar in shape. We find it fasinating that two pieces found miles apart can look so similar. More recently we have begun to seek and collect larger root system pieces. These can be used as bases for coffee tables, benches or just garden decor.
