Got off to a good start with a close 7-6(5), 7-6(7) win over Matt Illingworth but with a ranking now at 667 he isn't seeded.

Italy's 6th seed Claudio Grassi will be much tougher in round 2.

Unfortunately subsequent scans revealed it was more serious and Alex is likely to be out for up to 3 months. He'll be hoping to make a comeback on the autumn European indoor circuit
