It's Monday. New Jamaican Basses for the masses.

Busy Busy and Alberto D'Ascola aka Alborosie (Kingston Town) created a nice anthem with synthie-swagger on a dirrrty south beat with Tempo Riddim bassline adaption.

Dramatic, piano licks, simple beat. Daseca try nothing new, using their standart working style and Demarco spitts in various modes. I'm awaiting the next step in Tropical Bass direction.

I love it how McGregor gets away from the one-riddim-10-artists-concept and makes real songs for artists. This one is nearly a Pop song, but a Pop song with nuff style. Love the horns. Still thinking Mavado is the don.

This interview conducted in Atlanta after a Baby Cham performance is original content from the award-winning Highlanda.com. Big ups to top rated Baby Cham! Look out for the something new from Highlanda coming at you over the internet very soon.

Kahlil: Cham you just mashed up and leveled Planet Q. What do you have to say about the show?

Cham: Its like a regular night. Everyday of the week we work; Monday through Friday. We just thank the fans for coming out and showing us so much love. Each time we try to give them at least 190% worth of work, you know…?

Kahlil: When can we expect the next album?

Cham: At the end of this year or early next year. I’m in the studio right after this tour. I’ve been touring since last year October, non-stop. I’ll get a break now so I’ll be in the studio trying to get some tracks together for the next album

Kahlil: As far as influences and motivation, what’s your driving force right now?

Cham: I feel its my mother and son–straight up. And just love for the music and trying to see the music reach places. Music, in regards to reggae music and dancehall music as a whole.

Kahlil: …And who were some of the artists you looked up to when you were coming up also?

Cham: Dave Kelly, Buju Banton, Wayne Wonder, Major Worries, Shabba Ranks, the majority of the top entertainers from Jamaica. Every single entertainer that was mashing up the dancehall scene while I was attending school, those were the artists I tried to portray–DJ their lyrics. And now I can do my own and hopefully have youth trying to portray me and DJ my styles.

Kahlil: How do you deal with the negative people and influences in the music industry?

Cham: I stick around the positive. I never go around the negative. Negative ain’t good for you at all. I stick to my family. My family is positive to me and never show me a negative side. And that’s it.

Currently signed to Atlantic Records, Baby Cham is best known for his 2006 single "Ghetto Story," featuring Alicia Keyes. The song features the usual soulful vocals of Ms. Keyes as Baby Cham throws down on a rags-to-riches story. His no-holds-back lyrics on growing up in poverty, violence and crime proved to be so powerful that the song was banned on Jamaican airwaves.

The question on everyone's lips over the weekend is: did Busy Signal really try to stab Idonia while both artistes were onstage at Mavado's Birthday Bash? During the reported onstage melee at the show, there was clear evidence of shoving and pushing between the artiste Busy Signal and Idonia's entourage, but no one knew the real reason behind the ruckus. Sources close to the J.O.P camp say that the fist-flinging fracas started when deejay Busy Signal moved towards Idonia with an "open ratchet", and they were forced to prevent him from approaching the deejay in such a menacing manner.

The incident happened at 'Gangsta 4 Life', Mavado's Birthday Bash over the weekend.

"We were just protecting the deejay, that's all, we figure say him mean Idonia harm because him start push hard through Idonia's entourage with him open ratchet and we couldn't allow him fi just step to the deejay like that...we never know him intentions and ah so the pushing start," the source told YardFlex.com.

"How him ah move so as an artiste?

The duo, Leftside and Esco are no more.

Though there was no drama, or as Jamaicans put it, 'passa passa' that caused the split, the fact is they have decided to pursue solo projects.

Matthew 'Esco' Thompson, in likening the split to Destiny Child's decision to explore solo careers, told THE STAR: "There is some truth to it. We don't have any bad feelings or anything like that. Some time in the future we might get back to working on projects together; you can never tell, but for now we are solo."

The duo, consisting of himself and Craig 'Leftside' Parkes have been working together for more than nine years, starting out as young selectors, then trying their hands at producing and finally as artistes. It was then that fans were introduced to their character 'Dr. Evil' and hits such as Tuck Een Yuh Belly, Wine Up Pon Har, Stay Far From We, among others.

Esco says, "It (split) didn't happen on a particular day or anything like that. It's something that we have been talking about for a while and about doing separate albums.

Album deal

From we hit, we decided that was what we wanted to do, then one day Leftside come to me and was saying that he got an album deal. I was fine with it and enthusiastic about it and I even deejayed on a few of the tracks on the album. Then, after that, is was back to travelling and in no time our album was taking off, so we just worked with it. We have always been interested in working on solo projects and sing different things. It's a risk, but it's something we want to try."

Though the two will no longer be performing together, Esco says they will still be giving fans a touch of their favourite songs when they hit the stage and "you know how it go. The production house is still in tact and we are still producing rhythms - we have some coming out soon. Leftside and Esco will continue in that respect, but people will start to see us as different entities. We won't be together on shows though."

Esco recently completed his first solo project called Showstopper and says, "Right now I'm going over a few things with management and fine-tuning it. We are going to pick from about 35 to about 15 and it's for the most part completed."

"Again, anything can happen in the future. If the two of us blow up on the solo scene, people might not be able to afford both of us on the same show," he laughed. "But if people want to bring something to the table, I'm sure we can work something out," he concluded.

That song is Anything For You, with Canadian deejay Snow, Nadine Sutherland (the two having a version by themselves), Beenie Man, Buju Banton, Terror Fabulous, Louie Culture and Kulcha Knox performing on the remix. And while the audio recording was, and still is, very popular, it was the video which put Anything For You over the top.

Shot in black and white in a recording studio the video is simple but extremely effective, capturing Buju Banton and Louie Culture when their locks were just beginning to grow, Terror Fabulous in his prime and a glowing, all grown-up Nadine Sutherland after her 'teen queen' era.

"Karen Mason from EastWest felt it would be good promotion. I was signed to EastWest and my album was scheduled to be released, so they wanted to keep me visible," Sutherland told The Sunday Gleaner.

huge hit

For her it was post the huge hit Action, done with Terror Fabulous.

Anything For You was recorded at Penthouse Records, and while all the performers were not necessarily in the studio at the same time they all came in that day. "The video was shot while, or after, we did our part on the song. We call it a 'live video'," Sutherland said.

Seeing that it was done that way, there are few scenes in which more than one person is featured, among them Snow and Nadine Sutherland, whose lines overlap at one point, Snow and Beenie Man, and Snow, Sutherland and Terror Fabulous.

There is no scene where two members of the then new deejay generation appear together.

Sutherland says that in studio "the energy was off the hook. Remember, everyone was creating on the spot. It's a true indication of the talents of these young men at that time. Everyone was busy writing; I don't remember any competition".

Debates raged then about whose part was the best (Beenie Man said "... I'm not Richard Kimble, don't tek me fe no fugitive ..."; Buju growled "Some man give dem min' dem heart dem soul an everyting, an a nex man deh wid dem ting". Terror Fabulous chanted "If you see me walking out den something mus be wrong, I would neva do yu dat, trus' me nuh ooman". Louie Culture lilted "Me no fool fi go buil' up me residence, an a nex' man live een like a president, all a teach private lesson to me student ...". And Kulcha Knox (whose part is often treated as an afterthought) intones "it's all about love, love it's all about."

Sutherland is clear about which segment is he favourite. "Buju's. That the part I deejay when I perform it onstage. All the parts are special though. I love them all," she told The Sunday Gleaner.

However, the all-star studio cast never made it onstage to perform together. "It has never happened. What a shame!" Sutherland said.

"Great music lives together. I am glad, I am proud to be a part of this song."

Tads Drops Ultimate Reggae Dancehall CD

Tads Recording has done it again with the release of his latest compilation CD the Ultimate Reggae Dancehall Experience 2008. This album comes with the hottest hits for 2007 and all we can say about it is that it definitely sell off.The collection can take on VP’s Strictly the Best track for track and leave it still standing! The compilation CD kicks off with Anthony B’s mega hit ‘Tease Har’ and this song needs no introduction as since its release it has taken Jamaica by storm. It also played a dominant role on the charts both in Jamaica and on the overseas charts. Richie Spice makes his contribution on the CD with ‘De Plane Land’ another top song on the compilation CD. ‘On The Rock’ by Mavado and JayZ …what more can we say of this track that even now is tearing the place apart. It’s blasting from every record shop, blessing the dancehalls and no session is complete unless this one buss the place. On The Rock sits very comfortable in the collection of hard hitting top songs. Busy Signal’s ‘Nah Guh A Jail Again’ comes in at #5 on the compilation album and we don’t have to say anything about this song…the record speaks for itself. Track number 6 is Queen Ifrica’s Daddy ‘Don’t Touch Me’ There another reggae classic that cuts to the heart of the matter when it comes to incest and sexual abuse. Wine Pon It, Munga Honourabel; Board House, Nesbeth and A Nuh Me Dat by Beenie Man are among the other top notch songs featured on the 22-track album. Upcoming new stars are also featured on the compilation CD such as Contractor with Break My Promise and Chuckle Berry with Bad Man, Bubu Zaro team up with Capleton and Contractor for Pain. This is definitely an album you want to go out there and purchase…no where else can you get so many hits stocked in one collection. Executively produced by Tad’s Record International, the album is a must have for the collection.

Liquor giant, Red Stripe, has relinquished its title sponsorship of Reggae Sumfest. Although the company is yet to send out an official statement on the matter, a company executive confirmed to Splash that Red Stripe "will not be the title sponsor for Sumfest this year". "We will, however, be sending out an official statement soon," the Red Stripe official stated.

In the run-up to the annual week-long festival, concerns have been expressed that Red Stripe was on the verge of pulling out of the calendar event, owing to what has been described as the "state of the music" as it relates to an over-abundance of violent lyrics by some dancehall artistes and the militant stance taken by these artistes against homosexuals.

The company executive, however, refused to comment on whether or not this had in any way impacted on Red Stripe's ultimate decision.

It is still unclear whether or not the beer company will be involved at any level with the staging of the premium reggae/dancehall festival, which is celebrating 16 years this year.

Other reports surfacing are that Red Stripe was the official sponsor of the bar at the Africa Unite concert held at the James Bond Beach in February, but the brand had refused any kind of acknowledgement for their sponsorship.

Branded as 'the coolest beer company', Red Stripe has been the the title sponsor of Reggae Sumfest since 2005, branding the event 'Red Stripe Reggae Sumfest'. This partnership has been described as a "marriage made at the bar counter".

Meanwhile, executive director of Summerfest Productions, Johnny Gourzong, up to press time, could not be reached for a comment.

Over the years, many of reggae/dancehall, r&b and rap's top artistes have appeared on the Sumfest stage. The white female dancehall artist, who is quite seasoned on stage and in studio; also as a musician, blurts out on her track titled, "Veteran:"
"Eh - when u see Spice tell har dis – whappen now - gyal a come outa diaper an a gwaan like she hot - a fe ave respect u know...How dem a diss veteran artist when - not even platinum record she sell..."
As one of a few new tunes available on Zerby's Myspace, and representing a preview of her upcoming album, the song "Veteran," seems unpopular.
According to an AP freelancer, "Why diss Spice?" Or is it a publicity ploy by a virtually unknown artist who bills herself as dancehalls first white DJ.
While Zerby has reportedly not come forward with any comments on her motive for penning such brow-raising lyrics, her management took the opportunity to bring 'the unknown' into the limelight with the usual plugs on how Zerby shaped her DJ experiences through linkages formed with people like Ninjaman and DJ Supercat, who is said to have been a mentor on her first album.
Zerby, who hails from the Mid-Western US, scorns the idea of dissing veteran artists, and she boldly declares that Spice shouldn't have done it. Is this going to spill over into a cross border verbal clash?
Whatever transpires, Zerby sounds like she can handle it, although her management told AP that they are not looking for a clash.
