Advertisements have recently been taken out in the national press for a production of Wedekind's Spring Awakening at the Oxford Playhouse.

It's unusual enough for a student play to seek that level of attention, but almost unheard of to do so because of who's in it. But then undergraduate thespians are not often also starring in Hollywood blockbusters.

In The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, Anna Popplewell played one of the four Pevensie children whose wartime evacuation takes them slightly further afield than the English countryside.

Talent aside, it was evident from her first moment on screen that radiant blue eyes and naturally bee-stung lips can have done her no harm in audition. This summer she returns to Narnia in Prince Caspian, whereafter her odyssey through CS Lewis's imaginary universe comes to an end.

"The line CS Lewis uses," she explains, "is that Susan 'becomes too interested in nylons and lipsticks', so we don't see her again."

It releases Popplewell from the kind of franchise which, for other child actors, can become a gilded prison. At university she has seized the day.

In her first term she played Lady Macbeth, in her second she did Tom Stoppard's Indian Ink and, last month, she appeared in Wedekind's revolutionary debut, a fin-de-siècle exploration of sexual self-discovery.

In every sense it's a far cry from the Narnia created by CGI and laboriously eked out on set at a rate of one scene every three days.

"The nice thing about student drama is that you're allowed to get things wrong, because it doesn't mean no one will ever hire you again."

It remains to be seen whether Popplewell, who plans to "get stuck in" after university rather than train, will graduate to a full-scale career.

Working among adults has certainly instilled a head-girl poise.

"I always thought if I'm going to put myself up for these things I have to be realistic. You may not look the part, you may be too short, too tall, too fat, too thin, too brunette, too blonde, or you may just not be good enough. And if you can't deal with that then you shouldn't throw yourself into it."

Popplewell has been acting since she was eight, when she was talent-spotted by an agent in a Saturday morning drama club. She landed a small part in ITV's Frenchman's Creek, then made her movie debut at nine as one of Fanny Price's horde of little siblings in Mansfield Park.

Although their parents are nothing to do with the profession - her father is a QC, her mother an immunologist - her siblings have dipped their toes in, too. Her sister was in Love, Actually and her brother spent eight months in Australia playing a Lost Boy in Peter Pan.

There may have been only two Narnia films, each of which took six months to film, but they have fanned across Popplewell's teenage years.

She was 14 when she began the audition process, and the second film is opening with her aged 19. She did her GCSEs during the first film, shot partly in New Zealand, and her A levels during the second, where she had her own flat in Prague.

"If you're working 12-hour days then you come home to do three hours' homework, it's quite a lot on your plate. In between battle shots I was sitting on a chair on set in my leather bodice with my ring binder of English notes."

Since leaving school and Narnia, the oldest Popplewell has not strayed too far from the orbit of CS Lewis. She is reading English at Magdelen, where Lewis taught predecessors of hers for 29 years, and has been re-reading The Chronicles of Narnia.

"I could have written an essay about him, but I'd had quite a lot of CS Lewis stuff already. They are written with a subtle narrative voice: there is definitely an author, but he encourages you to fill in the blanks yourself, which means children enjoy them."

Blue-screening, in which she and her co-stars play opposite animated characters voiced by actors they will meet for the first time at the premiere, makes similar calls on her imagination.

"You have to recreate things visually for yourself. You do learn by playing opposite an imaginary mouse, but I'd like to do something less technical. What I love is acting, and the technical stuff does tend to slow things down. When people ask what I'd like to do next, the answer is usually, 'Something with people in rooms.'
