Although this is another New York based show, i am glad to state that it is not a NYPD based show but rather is FDNY. There is alot of crud remarks and inuenduo's it is a nice change of pace compaired to today's predictable and rather un-interesting television programes.

It's hard to find the place where he wants to go run. Running along Mulholland doesn't seem like the best idea ever for reasons he can't quite put a finger on. He doesn't stop to consider it much more than that.

He picks a street -- a street lined with palms, with upscale strip malls, with people who won't look twice when he parks a Bentley and climbs out in new-looking running clothes -- on a day before the fires start, but after the heat and humidity start to press in and on him like they're trying to kill him. He doesn't bring any water with him, either, and he didn't stop to take any pills before he left, so it's not long before he gets one hell of a headache, left over from the kid he didn't find who may or may not have beaten him up and stolen his clothes.

His head throbs with his feet on the pavement, and he's sweating like crazy, and he tells himself that it's all leaving and when he stops running he'll be okay again. That it'll all be gone -- the girl he couldn't find, the mental unsteadiness triggered by his throwdown with Gabriel Gray, the failure. That, like the motto of a thousand mediocre high school sports teams, pain is weakness leaving the body.

Six miles from where he started, he pulls up, gasping, dripping with sweat. His hands rest on his thighs. He spends two minutes re-learning how to breathe.

The street has changed from where he started. Nobody looks twice at a guy running, but here there are convenience stores and taco trucks. He buys a liter of water at a 7/11. Then he goes to the truck parked in the lot and buys four tacos. The really hot sauce goes on them. He might die of food poisoning but it will be a good death.

Charlie takes the bus back. It takes two hours to find his car. He smiles most of the way.

Ted looks askance when Charlie comes home, but doesn't say anything. After a long shower, Charlie cuts his finger slicing tomatoes and asks where the band-aids with the dinosaurs on them went.

After that, he goes upstairs, and spends some time contemplating all the blanks on his wall. His case wall. There's space for Rachel Seybolt; there are pictures of Bobby Stark, of Carl Ames, of <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Constance, of his ex-wife.

There are a lot of blanks.

"What did I learn today."

Charlie stares at the wall, his arms folded.

"What did I learn."

Life: Pilot

I have come to the belief that Life may actually have a chance this season. Not because of the crimes he and Detective Dani Reese solve -- hey, a murder is a murder is a murder. Not because of Charlie's mix of innocence, Zen quoting or quirkiness. I think what is going to keep people tuning into the program is the whole sub-plot of the series: trying to find out who the heck framed Charlie for the murder of three people.

From what we see in this first episode is could be practically anyone he knew previously. Perhaps it's his boss, Lieutenant Karen Davis, who wants nothing more than to see him out of her department. Maybe it's his former partner, Officer Robert Stark, who seems to go about like Charlie wasn't locked in solitary confinement for a dozen years. Or, it could be any number of other people that may be looked into as the show progresses.

Take Dani Reese for example. She's a recovering drug addict that's supposed to be in some type of program. However, something else seems to be going on with her. Promiscuity? A new addiction to sex and/or alcohol? I'm not sure. We got such a brief snippet of her outside life in the pilot episode that it's hard to tell. Yes, you'll say that it adds to the mystery of the character. I'll counter by saying that it really doesn't establish what the character is all about, and whether we should be supportive of her or angry at her. Again, yes, it's hard to make such a decision in the first episode. I say that while it is difficult, what we see of a character in a series premiere sets the stage for what we think of that character as the show progresses.

As for Charlie . . . the Charlie that we see in this first episode is a bit irritating. Eating all that fruit and showing ignorance of modern technology. I'll give him the fact that he doesn't know about Instant Messaging, but I can't believe that he never saw anyone in or near the prison talking on their cell phone.

Besides those two things I actually like Charlie's investigative style. Because of his education in the way of Zen he is one of the calmest police detectives I've seen on television. He also has that sixth sense that some other detectives wish they had. A good example of this is when he finds the severed finger buried underneath the victim's dog. Another is when he smells marijuana on the shirt of the victim's stepfather. It reminds me a bit of the investigative techniques used by one Shawn Spencer of Psych. Crews and Reese as a team remind me of Seeley Booth and Temperance 'Bones' Brennan of Bones, except in reverse. Take away Reese's off-putting attitude towards Charlie and she has that same type of 'please stop pulling my leg' feeling that Booth has every time Bones says something that's way out in left field. Charlie has Bones' matter-of-fact attitude and innocence. He's also missing that switch in his brain that stops him from saying something he shouldn't. Right now, since they are just starting out, they do not make a good team. However, if the show continues and the producers let these two characters grow, they could be a duo that is right up there with Bones and Booth, or Benson and Stabler of Law & Order:SVU.

So, there you have it. Please give this show a few more episodes to see if grows on you. Hopefully there will be enough audience to let this happen.

A friends view of Charlie Crews & Life

Normally, when i came have the TV, I'm a purist for the police procedural. Monk, Psych, in fact, most of USA's crime-with-a-twist shows, annoy the heck out of me. My only exception: NBC's Life, which i only heard about after the first 4 episodes had screened.

Okay, so Life is pretty much just a slot-filler for the end of the year when TV is not at its best. Charlie Crews is a cop who spent 12 years in prison for a murder he didn't commit. Now exonerated, Crews' lawyer brokers a settlement by which Crews wins something like $50 million plus the opportunity to be a detective back in the LAPD.

Of course, the show is ridiculous on so many levels. First and foremost, the premise: as if the LAPD would ever, ever, ever let the City Attorney broker a settlement to allow a convicted felon, exonerated or not, wear a badge. And even if they did, they sure wouldn't assign him to a case like in last week's episode "Civil War": Two Iranian kids are murdered and left in a convenience store freezer case, and a third is kidnapped. In the real world, that'd be at the center of a national media storm.

And yet, somehow, star Damian Lewis convinces me to suspend all possible disbelief.

Lewis is a frighteningly talented British actor, who, as a tall redhead with a pointy face, has so far stumbled in scoring meaningful Hollywood roles. While his classmates Joseph Fiennes and Daniel Craig have progressed into household names, Lewis's best success was a lead in Steven Spielberg's Band of Brothers and a small but crucial role in the quickly forgotten Stephen King thriller Dreamcatcher.

In Charlie Crews, Lewis has crafted a dark character, rich with quirks and passion. Prison turned Crews into a Zen-fully loopy philosopher, who, much to the annoyance of his partner, regularly loses himself in simple musings on fruit and butterflies and the mysteries of life. Yet, as silly and lofty as his ethereal ramblings are, they amazingly don't seem to contradict his violent reflexes. He'll gleefully engage in knife fights with perps; he's got no qualms about kicking the crap out of woman-beaters in bar restrooms. Crews is obsessively mapping out the conspiracy to frame him in a Memento-style chart on the wall of one of the empty rooms in his mansion. And he does love his hookers. Everyone has a vice.

There are crime dramas. And then there are crime dramas with twists. The difference is enormous.

Look at the Law & Order dynasty, the CSI family: for both, the writers downplay the detectives' characters and choose the crimes themselves, the sheer depravity of human nature, to command center stage. Sure, SVU's Olivia and Elliot wrestle with their inner demons. Sure, CSI Miami's Horatio has a teenage kidnapper for a long-lost son. They're still tangential to the mysteries they solve, though; the episodes that focus on their personal problems are generally the worst in season. Gary Sinise and Jerry Orbach could be animatronic for all I care, as long as they're still out there piecing together the stories ripped from the headlines.

Yet, you get an actor like Damian Lewis, and the character captures you, and i am sure that the second season will be given better writters.

Thanks for putting me onto this show Scully, this has become on eof my favorite shows since Blue Heelers.
