During the first two weeks in September, we have travelled to Lombardy and Piedmont in Italy to visit the Italian Lakes. Bordered to the north by towering mountains and sprawling towards the Plain of Lombardy, each lakes has its own character and feel; a unique baggage of shore-lined communities with their own customs and heritage.

The lakes have been popular since ancient Roman times and over the centuries they have gained a stupefying artistic legacy. Magnificent lakeside and island villas and gardens dot the area and provide perfect venues where you can feast the eye and appease the soul. The palaces and gardens on the Borromean Islands, the sanctuary of Santa Caterina del Sasso Ballaro, the islet of San Giulio on Lago d'Orta are just a few examples of enchanting spots that grace the area.

Isola San Giulio, Lago d'Orta - the place that bewitched us

"Men travel faster now, but I do not know if they go to better things," wrote American author, Willa Sibert Cather. Travel has, for some people, become a consumption. Travel fast to see more places. It's like gulping down food without taking time to taste. We tried to do the opposite; to tone down the pace and immerge ourselves into a new, exciting culture.

Lazing about near Lake Varese

We stumbled upon unexpected jems that gave us immeasurable joy, like the sparkling clean Lake Comabbio, with its surrounding tiny villages, each a little jem. We tried to enjoy the simple things that we often take for granted at home. The common act of sitting down together on a bench, having a snack and relaxing our eyes on green countryside and blue water was bliss.

On Lake Maggiore, we travelled mostly by ferry. The city of Angera, with its convenient quay was a stone's throw away from us. Travel by boat might be slower than using the car or train, but it gives you time to taste the places; to absorb the atmosphere. Travel by water is analogous to Slow Food - it was meant to be enjoyed and tasted to the full; to be remembered a lifetime. I shall remember vividly for a long time our approach to the monastery of Santa Caterina from the lake. The ancient buildings, almost an extension of the lofty cliff-face itself, perched out on the lake like a balcony.

Many thanks to all the friends who have made our stay so pleasant and have given me their precious time in the form of interviews, guided tours, photography permits etc, especially the staff at the Borromeo properties, Villa Taranto, and the Cenacolo Vinciano in Milan, Beppe Grignoli of the mushroom association AMINT and author Will Facchinetti Kerdudo. A special thanks to Kevin and Annamaria with whom we spent some of the best moments and whose company we miss!

Italy's Lake District

It's been quite a while since I could find the time to sit down and keep you up to date on my latest projects. I have just returned from a visit to northern Italy, where together with my wife and little son, I have breathed for a while the spirit of Lake Maggiore and sampled life in Lombardy and Piedmont. For some time, we have tried to live as Polentoni!

Lake Maggiore has been a magnet for illustrious men of letters like Charles Dickens, Gustave Flaubert, Stendhal and Ernest Hemingway, and some of the surrounding cities, like Stresa, still have a lingering flavour left over from the passage of these talented people.

The lake infiltrates the lives of the communities who live on its shores. It affects the climate, is a means of transport and its resources are an asset to the shore inhabitants. Its layout, a blend of water, rock and mountains, is a masterpiece of the greatest artist of them all - Nature.

View over the lakeside city of Angera

Visiting Lake Maggiore destinations proved very convenient, as we could travel in comfort using the efficient, state-run ferry service. Approaching from the water, sights become extremely exciting and often dramatic.

The enchanting Santa Caterina del Sasso Ballaro monastery

We consider ourselves lucky. We had the opportunity to discover some magical places that shall linger in our memories for life, like the Island of San Giulio on Lake Orta. Besides we enjoyed the company of Kevin and Annamaria. It was such a joy for us to become part of their lives for a while.

The simple joy of being together - budding friendships

Anna gave us quite a surprise when she gifted us her first book, Deliri Spesso Notturni, a collection of reflective thoughts about everyday life. Anna is very talented. She managed to transmit her emotional charge through her thoughts, and words seem to flow effortlessly out of her eloquent pen. During her candid search for the meaning for life, she exposed her inner thoughts without embarassment or filters. Her book is an uninhibited spotlight on the meaning of life all'Italiana.

Lake Maggiore is the celebrity but we discovered that sometimes, the least popular places are the most magical. Lake Orta, Commabbio and Monate are little gems, surrounded by tiny little villages that invite you to call them home. The people who live in these forgotten spots are exquisite. For instance, while we were visiting the tiny village of Mercallo, I met a retired gentleman, Egidio, who took me on a spontaneous tour of his village, introducing me to many people on the way and telling me interesting facts about the village that he loved so much.

Egidio, the embodiment of friendliness and hospitality

Travel is all about making connections - history, culture, lifestyle, cuisine. The possibilities are endless; the prospects infinite. We travel to get a taste of these connections, and if we are lucky those dips into foreign cultures are assimilated inside us, becoming a part of our being. The friendships we make often last for a lifetime.

I'm getting too sentimental ! I have to go back to work, for I have a number of articles to write and the deadlines are closing in. So for now, I will leave you with these little snippets.
